FIG.3 and FIG.4 show the distribution of the existing large bulk carriers and oil tankers picked up in FIG.l and PIG.2 respectively by the flag, by the five year period of their birth and by their careers of renaming. A ship may be renamed to get rid of ill luck after repeated troubles or a serious trouble of herself or her crew, or at the time of changing charter. But most often she is renamed when she is sold to other party or becomes managed by other party.
Of course, some ships are sold or are transferred under other management.
Nevertheless, the data of renaming of ships certainly indicate the vicissitudes of their technical preservation.
These graphs carry suggestions as follows.
(1) About 16 96 of the large bulk carriers and oil tankers under the age of 5 years have been renamed. The rate of renaming increases with their ages. The majority of them over 15 years old have changed their names at least once.
